Laurence York is a co-founder and director of York+Kane Architects.
After graduating from the University of Greenwich with distinction he worked for a number of years for world-renowned architect Norman Foster in his London studio, and was instrumental in the success of projects such as the Museum of Roman Antiquities in Narbonne, Europe's tallest tower in Warsaw, and the competition-winning masterplan for Cairo's Maspero district.
Afterwards he worked for Freehaus Architects, where he was the project lead on a number of projects including the award winning refurbishment of the London headquarters for The Africa Centre, and the award winning proposals for the ClementJames Centre in North Kensington.
Laurence then spent a number of years alongside Samuel working as part of the in-house design and development team for a series of property developers, leading the development of a range of large-scale hotel schemes for notable historic buildings in London’s Piccadilly Circus, Haymarket and Knightsbridge.
Laurence is an inventive and meticulous architect, with a focus on the intersection of materiality, craft, and the human experience of space. He is particularly interested in Arts and Crafts architecture and the mid-century case study houses, both of which explored how thoughtful design and quality materials can enhance everyday living. His work is driven by the belief that architecture should serve the needs of the average person, improving the quality of homes through a deep engagement with craft and construction.
